Interview - Melodic.net

After a commercial success in the debut album that went gold earlier, Flyleaf is continuing touring hard and is now on their second Family Values tour. They have this year shared stage with acts like Korn, Evanescence, Atreyu, Trivium, Hellyeah and Neurosonic, or should I say that those bands had the opportunity to share stage with Flyleaf? Got the opportunity to send a bunch of questions to guitarist Jared Hartmann about tour life, success and the upcoming album?

Hey there how are you?
Jared: Im good, Im taking a break from playing World of Warcraft.

Saw you in the new Die Hard movie recently, which was really cool. Didnt know that you were featured there and it came as a really positive surprise. Whats the story behind that?
Jared: Im not really sure about the story behind it. I just got an e-mail one day saying we were going to be featured in it. I thought it was really cool.

You were also had the Nine Inch Nails song, "Something I Can Never Have" on Underworld. Two songs on two cool action movies! Are you an action rock band?
Jared: Haha I guess so.

Youre in the middle The Family Values Tour. How has it been so far?
Jared: It has been great. All of the bands we are playing with are so cool and so friendly. Its been great getting to play for our fans and see some familiar and new faces. Its also really cool getting to play with Korn again, those guys are awesome.

This is the second time youre on it. How would you compare this line-up to last years?
Jared: Its a great line - up just different. The Deftones are one of my favorite bands so it was amazing having them on it last year, and after seeing Stonesour live last year I became a big fan, those guys can put on a show like no other. This year is cool too. Were getting to share the stage with HellYeah, and Evanescence puts on a great show with amazing lights. The guys in Atreyu are really cool and Korn always puts on an amazing show.

You have been busy touring since your debut album back in 2005. Doesnt it ever get tiring?
Jared: We do get tired sometimes and miss home. Its hard having to feel disconnected from your friends and family too. But, we love what we are doing because we know its what were supposed to be doing right now. We love getting to meet our fans and hear how our music has helped them.

Your self-titled album has sold more than 500.00 albums now, which is awesome. Did you expect this kind of success? Ok, you got a great album with songs that all of people can connect to, but it seems harder to sell a lot of albums these days.
Jared: Growing up I would have never imagined I would be in a band that sold over 500,000 albums. Its kind of overwhelming to think about how far we have come. I think it is harder to sell albums these days, so we?re just so thankful and in awe of whats happened.

How big part of your success do you think that your frequent touring have had?
Jared: I think our frequent touring has contributed to our success. Were always out on the road so maybe that makes it harder for people to forget about us!

Have read that you will step into the studio late summer or so. Is that true?
Jared: Its still up in the air as to when we will go back into the studio. Were really excited about getting to have time to write and record again. We have about 6 or 7 new songs that weve been working on so hopefully well be able to get into the studio by early next year, but were really not sure yet.

Like I mention, your self-titled album went gold and now youre an established and well-known band. The situation is pretty different! Have you felt any pressure now when writing for the second album?
Jared: No, I havent felt any pressure yet! I know that we only got to where we are because God blessed us, so if he wants our next record to do well then it will.

How have you written for this new album? Do you write while on tour or do you do it while your home and maybe more relaxed?
Jared: Well, weve written about 6 songs I guess and we have ideas for several more. It seems like its easier for me to write when Im at home because I have more time and no one is watching me waiting for me to come up with something. We do write on the road though. Lacey just got Garage Band for her Mac and she has been writing a lot on it lately

Two songs have been tested while on tour in "Again" and "Have We Lost". Will they make it the album do you think?
Jared: Im not sure. When it comes down to writing the album it will be a decision between us and our producer and our label what songs actually make it. I love those songs and they both have a great meaning so hopefully they will make it.

You worked with Howard Benson last time that did a fantastic job. Will you work him again this time?
Jared: Were not really sure who will work with. We really respect Howard though so he is definitely an option.

Thanks for your time and good luck with the forthcoming shows and album!
